Not knowing what they'll think, he slowly walks across the room and plugs it in. The machine that he labors over with such precision holds the key as he presses play. As the sounds waft around the room, the recording engineers glance at each other with approval and surprise that this small stature boy could create such quality.

This, was our experience this past week as I had the pleasure of taking my thirteen year old to a recording studio to ask for direction. Our son started to write music when he was 12 (possibly 11). With about a year of piano lessons under his belt, he found a music writing program called LMMS and was hooked. He has been writing music since then and has over 35 songs. Knowing that I cannot help in the area of music composition, I knew I needed to seek out advice. The studio engineers said that he is very gifted and paired him up with a Master's student at a local university. He is now on the path to getting even better.

I am not writing this to brag on my son, but to encourage you. Your child has a gift. A wonderful gift that God gave them, They have a gifting that needs to be found.

We found that both of our boys really developed their deep interests around the age 11/12. Our oldest started researching bungee cord servers/port forwarding/ and programming around that age and ended up getting hired at 14 and 15 to write Java based programs/games for a large Minecraft server owner. He also wrote a small plug-in that has been downloaded over 10,000 times.

How did we get there? Tons of sweat? Well, not really.

We did ,of course, take an interest in what they are doing, because I believe that is crucial. When my kids try to tell me what they are teaching themselves, I hang on their every word, even if it doesn't really interest me (or at least attempt to look like I am- programming......ugh).

We blocked out special time for this. On school days, there are no video games. But, the kids can use the computer for any type of learning when they are done with their school work. This is particularly hard on my 10 year old, but do you know what he did the other day because he was bored and all his friends got to play video games? He wrote a story.

Teach where they need to be taught. I have in the past and continue to teach our music boy piano lessons on a bi-weekly basis. And, when our son expressed interest in programming, my hubby taught him and his friends a class in Java programming for 10-12 weeks.

As a family, we did not tend to do tons of activities and we started them later. Currently, our eldest has 1 activity (soon it will be two), the second child has two, the third child has one, and the fourth child has two.

The biggest factor of all, I believe, is to connect them with the resources they need. Get them aligned with the people that can help them and guide them. This does not have to cost a ton. The grad student that my son will be working with does not charge much- he's a grad student. The Java class was the cost of a book and a Dad willing to spend time with a bunch of boys to teach them.

Don't waste your time on trying to make your kid a jack-of- all trades. We did try a lot of sports when my kids were 10 and 11, just to try it out. They didn't really like most of them, so we knew that, that was not the direction in which we should go. It is good to expose kids to those experiences, but once you've established that it is something they're not interested in, move on. It's ok.

Be encouraged, pour into your child, pray for your child and use those computer screens for good things. Teens get such a bad rap. They are often seen as lazy and unproductive. But, that doesn't have to be the case. Turn them from being consumers to producers. You can find their gifts, you just have to turn their focus a bit to do it.
And, I am so excited because I threw this recipe together myself! He was talking about a GF and DF muffin, can you believe it?

Tantalizing GF & DF Blueberry Muffins

makes: 24-30 regular sized muffins

1 1/8 cu. sugar
2 1/2 cu. coconut flour
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
4 eggs
1/2 cu. canola oil (although I bet coconut oil would be even better)
3 cups almond milk
2 tsp. lemon juice
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 cups blueberries

1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)

Preheat oven to 425
Mix all ingredients together.......Blueberries get mixed in last and don't overdo the mixing after they're added. If you mix it too much after they're added, you muffins will be completely blue. :-)
Place the batter in cupcake liners in your cupcake pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Keep a close eye on them as they bake- tops may brown. If so, you could adjust temps and times! ENJOY!
As You Go

Rarely does a person realize the
gift that they are to those around them until it’s too late. They trudge through life doing what they have
to, to make ends meet. Hoping all the
while, that they are making a difference somewhere, they continue to move
forward collecting regrets along the way.

It is likely that we all know at
least one person fitting this description.
The one that comes to my mind is my Father-In-Law, Grandpa Craig. He was stubborn and graceful, tough and
soft. There were days when I wanted to
scream my head off at him and days when I wanted to give him a huge hug. Life around grandpa was an adventure, to say
the least.

Unfortunately, he died just 1 week
ago. It was sudden and completely
without warning. He was mowing and his
heart just gave out.

We received the horrific phone call
and could not believe what we heard. Grandpa
was gone. Immediately, we knew we needed
to be by mom’s side. The nine to ten hour
trip seemed to drag on forever. We just
wanted to be sure she was ok. When we
arrived, we were relieved to see that she was surrounded by loved ones.

Grandpa Craig’s viewing was a shock
for all of us. Three hundred people
patiently waited to pay their respect.
Shaking each and every hand, mom stood and listened intently to the
stories people had to share. Grandpa
helped to mow the lawns of widows. He
also coached track, volunteered to do military funerals, lead the boy scouts,
took communion to shut-ins, and so much more.
With each person, the list grew while eight little grandkids gained a
better understanding of who their grandpa really was.

Those of us, who felt guilty for
being upset with him at times, watched it all happen with condemned amazement. He truly touched a vast array of lives.

The funeral, the next day, was a
beautiful testament to a strong man who raised two spectacular men. Grandpa was
a man who served God, family, and others.
These characteristics are also found in them. However flawed it might have been at times,
Grandpa pointed others to God and glorified Him for it. He brought God glory with both his life and
his death.

During the next couple days, we
spent time looking through paperwork.
Contained in a stack of random things, I saw a paper he wrote simply entitled,
“ESSAY”. The essay had not been completed, yet it gave insight into the mind of
a man who struggles in the same way we all do.

In the essay, Grandpa contemplated
what could have been. He loved watching
Judge shows as a kid, and thought that he would’ve been happier if he could
have been a lawyer. He claimed that if
he could change the past, everything would be better.

This composition did not speak to me
because I believe everyone should try to change their pasts. It spoke volumes because it showed that even
a man of 62, with wisdom and years of knowledge, contemplates these
things. Little did he know how much God
was using him, right where he was!

I believe Dad envisioned himself as unsuccessful
because of a lay-off he endured. Yet even
that, was a gift from above. The lay-off
enabled him to have time for the widows, the broken hearted, and those who
needed a hand.

So, as you take inventory of the
life you have led, let it not be an inventory of the money in your accounts and
the position in your company. But rather
let it be an inventory of the lives you have touched, the joy you have spread,
and the love you have given. Give away
that which you have been given, as Grandpa did, giving God the glory as you go.

Yesterday Z got off the bus with tear filled eyes. Our seven year old, who never cries, had been struggling with something major. I asked him what was wrong. He said that his lollipop was broken to bits. Knowing that there must be more to the story, I probed deeper. "What else is wrong honey?" Z replied, "When the principal handed out lolipops to the whole class, my lolipop was the only one without a ribbon." "Oh honey,"I said. "Aren't you glad that you spared another child from being the one without the ribbon?" Realizing that this did absolutely nothing for his pain, and that I was not seeing how much this hurt him, I asked if there was anything else. He replied that the day before, when the teacher was handing out treats, another child distracted her and she completely forgot to give him one. Yet, he said nothing.
My son's pain was completely real to him.

In that moment I felt like God cleared a path for me to minister to my child. Usually when my children get off the bus, we have choas. At 4 pm in the afternoon I have a baby and a very grumpy and demanding four year old waking up from nap. At 4:10 I have two elementary aged sons getting off the bus wanting to tell me everything at the same time, foraging to find snacks, and trying to do homework amidst everything else. Needless to say, I do not usually get a chance to spend time with any of them at 4:15.

B had no homework and went downstairs to play, C woke up happy and followed B, and A kept sleeping.

Z, my sweet son needed ribbons. I asked him if I could put some ribbons on his lollipop. "Sure mommy!" "OH, but could we make another lolipop out of pipecleaners and then put ribbons all over that? Becuase I want to give it to my stuffed dog, Nanook." "Of course sweetie, I replied" So, we spent ten minutes together fussing over pipecleaners and ribbons. He wrapped his arms around me so tightly, my child who never cries, and whispered, "thank you mommy." And because I had time to feel his pain he seemed at peace.

I don't know what prompted me to write out this story. I just feel like God wants me to. Maybe we all need to make time for ribbons in our life, to stop, and take a moment to feel our child's pain as it were our own.

I am sending this out to friends who, like me, have young children in their lives. We all have our good days and bad days with our kids. This was just a moment in time that happened to be good. Be encouraged and enjoy this wild ride called parenting!
C (7 years old) was freaking out on Friday morning as the bus pulled up. He was truly panicked. He said two little girls were trying to kill him on the bus. Obviously, my common sense told me that a Kindergarten and Second grade girl were not trying to kill him.

Because this all happened as the bus was coming, I didn't want to shove him on there without knowing what was going on. Therefore, I drove him to school and we talked about what was transpiring. He replied that the girls were growling at him and scratching him- I later found out that they're pretending to be wolves. This has been happening for some time though.

As I waved the bus along, earlier that morning, the bus driver expressed concern for Caleb. He informed me that he would not be driving the bus in the afternoon. This is a long weekend (no school till Tuesday) so I wanted to let him know now so that he can have a few days to figure out the situation. I called the bus garage to leave a message for the bus driver to call me so that he could know how C is doing and to let him know what the problem was.

The receptionist was happy to take down my number. She was going to give my number to the bus driver to call me back. But then she said, "hold just a minute please." When she got back on the phone, she commented that she can not give any of the drivers a personal message and that she needs to know what is happening on the bus. I told her with reservation...because I wanted to speak to the bus driver first. Maybe the girls hadn't been spoken to about this situation.

She informed me that what the girls were doing is considered bullying and that they need to look through all the videotapes to catch them doing it. The "videotape girl" will then call the school and let the parents know.

Am I crazy, or has this public school gone off the deep end? I love C and don't want him to get hurt but, there are several steps to consider before labeling this as bullying and sending the task off to the videotape girl. If I were the parent of the girls, I would want a chance to speak to my kids before it went to the videotape girl and the school. But, sadly, these parents don't have that choice.
I am very thankful for the love of music that God has given me. Singing is one of the things that I have put on the back burner because of my four wonderful children. This morning I was blessed to be able to sing "The Lord's Prayer" in church. I am so accustomed to singing contemporary music at our church that it was a welcome change to sing in the Operatic style that I was trained to do. Thank you God for your Grace!!!! He took the nervousness away and let His glory shine through. Here it is:Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07603288346705420669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7760437378557526908.post-10925276028381872052013-09-13T18:10:00.003-07:002013-09-24T11:26:28.797-07:00An Unlikely MessengerHe plodded along with his head down, gazing at the path he takes a thousand times a day. A man doing his work diligently, with purpose. Hundreds of people see him but take no notice. Without a glance to see who's listening, he speaks in a unwavering voice, "Jesus Christ is King of Kings and Lord of Lords." He continues on to collect the grocery carts in the Wegman's parking lot.
I don't remember ever seeing this man before, but today, he got my attention. To many he's just a face in the crowd, but to me, he is an inspiration. Without fear, he said what so many are afraid to share. I do not know why it is so hard for me to share my Faith. Fear of rejection is probably the main reason. But, this man was not afraid.
When I was in the car, just prior to hearing this, I heard a story about churches that hold a special "bring a friend to church day." They were quoting statistics that only a small percentage of Christian share their faith. Now I know I am not alone.
So here I sit, blogging about everything under the sun, concerning kids yet fail to give you the one thing that matters, the one thing that can literally save your life.

Jesus, He loves you. He made you. Every little detail about you, He did that.

Life sometimes stinks....sometimes it really stinks! Those stinky things, those things that Satan is doing for evil, God is weaving together for your good. I know it doesn't all make sense, but it's true.

We stink, we make bad choices all the time. God is perfect- He can't co-exist with stinky things, so He sent Jesus (who is perfect) to die. To die in our place. That should've been us....but it wasn't. He did it for us because HE loves us. We just need to confess that "darn it we stink- we are flawed, we sin", we can't do this thing called life on our own. And ask God to help us and seek His will for our lives. So that we can change the way we live our lives and LIVE for Him. Which allows us to be in Heaven with HIM someday.

Please forgive me for being a wimp and scared to share with you the things that truly, really matter. And thank you God, for giving me the courage. May we all be bold like the Wegman's employee. If you have any questions about what I said above, feel free to comment or find a local church to help you out. We have no idea when our lives will end (I just lost a sweet friend- age 52 last week). In fact, he does everything slowly. For example, when taking a bath last night, he disappeared for an hour while his three siblings watched two TV shows. When he came out, it was no skin off his back, he was finally ready for bed.

Our extremely laid-back son can really get under my skin, especially in the mornings. When he's getting ready for school, it's like pushing a snail through quicksand! He gets distracted by toys and pieces of dirt on the carpet. He's very intelligent and he's not being belligerent, he's just being Z.

This morning was particularly rough for both of us. He was going slowly and in my frazzled state of hurrying him, I made some statements to him that were not encouraging at all. I said things like, "Come on Z, you always go slow- speed it up!" I try to avoid absolutes (words like always, never, etc...) with my kids because, most of the time, they're used to hurt people, not help. This morning, I was failing on this front.

When we were waiting for the bus, he told me that he wasn't distracted this morning, he actually had to try on 3 pairs of pants to find a pair that fit him. ( He puts away his own laundry and has two brothers- the clothes often get confused) I felt about as tall as the snail I mentioned earlier.

I apologized and asked my sweet Z to forgive me. He happily did so.

The bus rolled away and he waved as they went out of sight. But, I stood there wondering what he's taking with him today. What kind of burden is he bearing? What words are repeating over and over in his head?

I went into the house and checked my Facebook account. There was a message from my Aunt Wendy. She has been a real encouragement to me when it comes to my writing and encouraging others. When I would write a funny Christmas letter, she'd be the first to say, "You need to be a writer!" She has been a model to me in encouragement.

I sat there and cried because I realized that everything out of my mouth this morning had been negative and nagging. I showed my son no signs of encouragement. Tomorrow is another day. Hopefully, I can be that encouraging voice to him, like my Aunt Wendy has been to me.
The sun was streaming through the window, Z was hard at work, and he realized that
he needed to use the restroom. He knew that this visit was not
going to be a quick one, so he informed the teacher and went on his
jaunt. When he reached the bathroom, he saw that the "wet floor" sign
was directing him to the uninhabited third floor. Z was washing his
hands when he realized that his classmate C was behind him. C told the teacher that he also needed the facilities. But, he had no
intent in using them.

Z was readying himself to go down the stairs when the voice of C entered his mind like a thick fog. “Why go back downstairs when they’re
just going to make you do work?” Well that was a very interesting
question indeed for an 8 year old boy.

The boys turned around and saw the deserted hallways as a labyrinth of ghostly
adventure. “Ghost hunt!” declared C. Z, tempted beyond
reason, could not help but join in. Eventually, the teacher, being quite
the hunter herself, figured out what went on in the dusty, dimly lit, hallways
of the third floor.

Needless to say, Z’s head hung low as he descended the bus steps and
headed toward me. Z said, “Mom there’s a note in my folder from the
teacher. But, C made me do it!” “What did he make you do?” I
asked. It was then that Z gave me details of the deception,
the trickery of his friend. “But, what was your choice?”
I asked. “I chose to follow my friend,” he mumbled. I questioned
further, “Did you know it was wrong ?” “Yes,” he squeaked. “Well, I
guess you also chose a discipline for yourself then didn't you.” I stated.

I don’t know about other parents, but I know that I sometimes struggle with
what to assign as my child’s punishment. This time was no
different. I have read several books that suggest to “make the punishment
fit the crime.” So I quietly went to my stash of workbooks, made a
photocopy of a couple worksheets and added it to the stack of worksheets that he had
before him.

Yes, it took him almost the whole evening to finish the pile in front of

It has always been beneficial for us to make the punishment fit the
crime. When the discipline fits the crime, the discipline usually only has to happen a couple times to learn that lesson. When all is said and done, I
hope that he’ll remember the work he had to do and not repeat that mistake
again. Hopefully, if C should ever convince him to slide down
another slippery slope, he’ll remember that an appropriate and fitting
discipline will be waiting in the wings.

This is normal for me. I am not sure how or why, but I usually end up learning quite a bit about them, as they do me, from the short amount of time we spend together.

The lady looked down at my items as she hurried the them along. She said, "Oh, I need to figure out what to make for my kids' breakfast tomorrow morning." She continued, "I made them pancakes yesterday and french toast today." I quickly realized that these were school days that she was talking about. After I pondered about asking for her address so I can join them in the morning, I collected my thoughts and said, "How about some cereal?" For that matter, yogurt, granola, fruit, etc....would also work just as well. She said, "Oh no, my kids have a late-block lunch, they need a hot breakfast." "Maybe I can give them oatmeal if they don't turn their noses up at it." I said, "Maybe they can take turns making their own hot breakfast?" I suggested this because I realized that they must be middle school or high school kids (she later told me that they are 8th grade twins). "They couldn't do that, I think I've spoiled them", she replied. I then preceded to tell her (this is where my friend K would say, "oh no, you didn't say that!), that my son who is 6 made his own scrambled eggs this morning and that she could offer that info to her girls for motivation. Yes, he put in too much milk and we had to strain off the liquid, but, he did it himself. She then told me that she works all day at one of the schools, and all night at Wegmans. The poor lady needs them to help.

Now, I realize that this woman may be suffering from the guilt of always working. But, that shouldn't give people an excuse to hinder their children's ability to care for themselves by spoiling them.

Maybe our kids have become more independent because there are four of them, or maybe it's because it is our hearts desire for our kids to be self-sufficient. Maybe it's a combination of the two. But as a couple, I know, we have been mindful of this and try to guide our kids toward independence.

Interestingly enough, we are a homeschooling family. That often gets the glares and comments about "sheltering our kids". We are very social and busy people- involved in many activities. But, more than that, we are training our kids not holding them back by spoiling them. We are training them to fly someday. In the past year and a half our twelve year old has made $600 mowing neighbor's yards and he has been taught the proper way to manage that money. Our kids can cook, clean, do laundry (the way their mother does it- which is the wrong way :-)), and basic home maintenance (redoing a deck, painting, gardening etc). We love our kids and spend time with them but honestly, if I didn't get any assistance and was bending over backwards to overly pamper them, I'd be 6 feet in the ground by now. We are simply outnumbered with four children running around.

So I implore all of us, myself included, to continue to assess what we are trying to teach our children. When they are 20 and about to strike out on their own, will they feel trained and empowered or a bit impish? It is up to us.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07603288346705420669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7760437378557526908.post-38250075002789661322013-06-16T18:50:00.000-07:002013-06-20T10:22:55.370-07:00A Wonderful Discovery! Some of you may or may not have read about my stomach problems and everything that was going on with me physically for so long. I had probably about 30 symptoms that were making me gradually feel like I was a 55 year old in a constant brain fog. I had symptoms ranging from post nasal drip to stomach issues, to neurological issues. Walking into a doctor's office with a list of 30 things wrong with you is enough to make any doctor think you're nuts. And, I was starting to wonder myself. How can any one person have so many nagging little things wrong?

I had some tests done, and most everything came back normal. I did however, have some stomach problems show up in the endoscopy. So, the doctors declared me somewhat normal and prescribed medication. There, done! Well, not quite. I still felt terrible!

After many months of struggling not only physically but now emotionally, I wondered what can I do???

I am a researcher by nature, so I found myself reading up on things online. I was already on a quest to make our family's diet better. So, my hubby bought a book for me called the UNHEALTHY TRUTH. Let me say this now: My husband always sees these kind of books as "Health Nut Conspiracy Theories". So, it was an absolute miracle that he bought it for me (from my Amazon wish list). I was shocked to see what's been happening to our food supply. I was appalled at how these foods can affect our body. Consider reading it for yourself. He actually is starting to see some of these things for himself too. See this article too.

Because I was so interested in these things, I was visiting one of my favorite websites called 100 Days of Real Food. I was trying to find a specific article pertaining to food items that day when I became distracted by an article on SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder). I will never be able to tell you why I was so interested in that article but to say that God must have lead me there. I don't personally know anyone with the disorder yet it intrigued me. It was definitely confirming what I had already learned through the book.

The article spoke about the fact that children with SPD can have great success and a lot fewer symptoms when on a gluten free diet. I continued reading the article to the end....and there is where I saw it. I saw a comprehensive list of the symptoms that a gluten intolerant person would endure. They were symptoms ranging from postnasal drip, to stomach issues, to neurological issues and everything in-between. God had lead me to answers that I had been desperately seeking for so long.

After that, I was determined to cut gluten from my diet completely. I also chose to cut out dairy at the same time. (Which I found out later, you should never cut out 2 things at the same time. If you do, you won't know which one gives you trouble.) I felt the same for two days, then REALLY tired for two days. After that, one by one, my symptoms started to go away. The constant fluid in the ears left, the post nasal drip was gone , the stomach things (many) started to ease, the brain fog gone, the tiredness lifted, the twitches in muscles lessened etc... I can stay up till midnight almost every night again without feeling exhausted!!!

I have been completely gluten and mostly dairy free (a girl has to have some ice cream every once in a while) for 6 months now. I feel awesome!!!

Why am I sharing this? Well first of all I am not a doctor, so see your doctor if you're having problems. I can only attest to what worked for me. It may not be the same for you. But, I am reminding you to be steadfast, continue to do your research. Don't just take the doctor's word that you are fine....if you're really not. Pray and seek God's provision for an answer! I did not just happen to read that article by chance. I am convinced that it was placed before me. And, don't forget to give God the GLORY!

THANK YOU GOD!
I am always looking for good ways to feed my kids great food while they’re
at school. I have spent a lot of time
looking online for ideas that would miraculously get my kids to eat awesome
things. An overwhelming amount of sites
made kids lunches into works of art! I
love art but some things just need to be quick.

Unfortunately, I tried to make one of those
wonderful artsy sandwiches into the shape of Tow Mater one day. It took
me over an hour! I have four kids, and

Who has that kind of time on their hands? So, I decided to compile some healthy, easy
lunches for our kids to eat. They may
not be works of art but they are certainly great and efficient. You can’t ask for more! Please note: at the bottom of all the lunch

Fall is my favorite time of year.
There are so many things to love!
Apple Cider, doughnut holes, hayrides, apple & pumpkin picking, corn
mazes, and hikes on leaf covered paths are some of the wonderful things to
enjoy during this season. But, there is
something that many of us overlook as we plan our activities during this
glorious time. We forget to use these
vibrant colors as inspiration for crafts with our children. If you’re looking to incorporate some crafts
in your day, here are some ideas that I found on PINTEREST. These crafts require little planning and most
of them use very few materials. Click on the project title to be directed to the original site.

It's an exciting milestone. We've had good times and bad times and from all of these situations, we glean knowledge that changes us. It's interesting to see the ways we've adapted to life together over the years.

Even though we adore our first child B, his entrance into the world was enough to rock even the strongest of boats. During labor I lost a lot of blood and was anemic for a while after the birth. B wouldn't nurse and he was extremely high maintenance (doctors probably could have labeled him as ADD). But, that might be because we were high strung! These are all things that were imposed on us, things that couldn't change.

Every time one of us got a moment away from the baby it was chalked up to our mental score board. So, it was only fair for the other person gets equal time away. That kind of thinking allows resentment to creep into your heart. Life doesn't work that way. Hubby "gets" 43 hours per week away from home. Was I ever going to get that?

This was an area that HAD to change! Resentment is an UGLY thing. Long periods of resentment/anger can cause all kinds of emotions that are not healthy. It can break down relationships and it can even cause physical problems.

Hubby felt like he was always under the microscope. Often he would hear questions like, How much time did you spend with the baby, and when can I get a moment to myself? At this point in life, a shower was a big deal!

Luckily, God blessed us with more kids. The more children we had, the less we thought of ourselves and the more we had to put self aside. Time has marched on and we have both grown. Hubby has gotten better at juggling the kids so that when I leave, there's no guilt like there used to be when I go out. The kids have gotten older and can do more for themselves. And now, I go out 1-2 nights per week while hubby tackles bedtime by himself.

Now that the kids are 3, 6, 9, and 11, I am starting to feel like I am getting some of myself back. I am writing, a bit more organized than I have been in years, and teaching again.

So hang in there, pray, love your hubby/wife and have more kids! (the last one was a joke- just having more kids will not necessarily solve your problems). And, whatever you do, don't let resentment creep into your heart. It will only hurt you and the ones you love. You can learn from what others have endured and hopefully you won't have to suffer as long. And always remember to turn to God for help.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07603288346705420669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7760437378557526908.post-58483388562025573852012-10-23T14:15:00.003-07:002012-10-23T14:15:15.165-07:00Staying safe while Trick or TreatingMycnymommy.com has posted my second article.

I've been a busy beaver lately. I was browsing a website that I check every once in a while and the lady who runs it/owner happened to be asking for help to expand her readership. Her site was exclusively couponing and money saving tips. One of her ideas was to have articles that might appeal to her readers. I applied, and she gave it a whirl. She asked for a piece on Halloween. That was a tough one for me. Although we do trick or treat, we by no means celebrate this holiday with the typical grim and gruesome fervor. So check out the article I wrote for her:

I have some more coming: On Monday she's putting another article of mine, trick or treat safety, up on her site. There will also be articles on crafty things, recipes and more. So, stay tuned and keep checking her site. Good news is, a news website picked up my article, redirected traffic to her site and her site hits are up quite a bit. There are also 2 other ladies helping her with some other development aspects. All of this is very exciting.

And also, if you see something advertised on her site and want to buy it, go through her site. She's a mom who's trying to make enough income on this site that she can stay home with her kids.

This is just a quick add on to the previous article. I am remiss to forget to mention the impact that our parents and grandparents have in this equation.

I remember watching my mom walk around with holes in her shoes, denying herself things, so that she could make sure we had what we needed. She delayed her own gratification. My Father worked two sometimes three (?) jobs to put food on the table. We didn't have a lot but we had what we needed.

My husband's parents have had to work many different jobs to make ends meet and are working hard to this day. My mother in law is awesome at stretching a dollar.

My Grandparents worked as butler and housekeeper.

Our home-life environment has a huge part to play in who we are as adults. May we be mindful of that as we move forward to spur our children on to hard work and self-sufficiency. And hopefully, they will learn to delay their gratification. I am happy to say that over the next couple months, I will be writing articles for a local website. I guess you could call me a free-lance writer now. I am very excited and feel blessed that my words will reach beyond my blog and reach even more people. In order to secure the job I had to do a piece on Halloween. Funny huh? I am not a big fan of Halloween but I was able to find ways to use my writing on it anyway. I wrote about "Alternatives to Traditional Trick or Treating". I listed things like mall trick or treating, the park that has a jack-o-lantern walk, the zoo, and local churches that have activities set up for that night.

I would've never ever thought that I would get paid for the words I put on a page. And, it truly is a miracle how it all came about. I pray that I can encourage others and continue to glorify God in the midst of all. So, if you think of it family and friends, pray for me that I would honor Him in the words I write. And with that I wish you all good night!

(When my first article goes live, I'll let you all know about it. And make sure that if you like it, you comment-on the website- to keep me writing!)

UPDATE: I was signed on, wrote two articles for her and she never paid me. Obviously, I did not want to continue that, so I stopped. Oh well, such is life! It's a 55 inch projection screen that is blurry and high maintenance. You have to take the back off of it to clean the three very large bulbs that give it light. The electricity that it requires to run has probably cost us quite a bit. For the first 13 years of our marriage we were a 1 TV household. This TV became #2. It was free. I love free or really cheap things.

Most of our kids friends have had flat screen TVs for a while. And our kids kept asking when we were going to replace the blurry behemoth. We kept saying, we have to wait... They heard that for a year and a half. They knew we were saving. We were waiting till prices came down; it's like waiting for the stars to align. Sure we could have put it on a credit card at any time, but where's the self discipline in that?

Then it happened! I was walking through the store and low and behold I saw a clearance table. One with flat screen TV's. They were all on the wall for 6 months as displays- but they were 30% off. Being someone who refuses to pay full price for anything, I called my hubby and asked him to research the brand. He looked it up, and it had 4 out of 5 stars. I was going to get a 42 inch High Def LCD TV for $250!!! We still had to buy HDMI cables, the mounting brackets, and taxes. So keep that in mind if you're ever going to purchase one.

It wasn't easy waiting a year and a half to replace the fuzzy monster. But, to our family, it was a valuable lesson. It taught our kids that 1. You don't always get what you want right away. 2. You need to save your money. 3. Patience 4.Using that money wisely (sales). My kids are watching me every day. They are making tough decisions with their money already. Yesterday I bought some new pants for our oldest. He wanted me to buy a shirt to match. I told him that he had plenty of shirts already and that if he wanted that shirt he could buy it with his lawn mowing money. He stood there for a while and chose to walk away because he assessed it as a want and not a NEED. I love passing these things down to my children. Being frugal is a good thing. They can learn a lot from it. Delay your gratification and they will delay theirs.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07603288346705420669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7760437378557526908.post-25303020729611807292012-10-08T12:14:00.002-07:002012-10-08T12:14:19.857-07:00Toddler PreppingToddlers are funny people. They can go from laughing to crying in 30 seconds. Toddlers are inquisitive, funny, intense, and lovable. They are truly a gift from God. They can, however, cause a lot of embarrassment in public. It seems that, when out and about with a toddler, things that they've never tried before seem fun and interesting to them. And, we, as parents are caught off guard.

You can't plan for everything- I certainly couldn't predict it when one of my kids (then 3 years old) decided to pull his pants down in Wal-mart. I didn't see it coming when one of my kids licked the glass (at least 4 feet of it) on the deli case at Wegmans. And, I certainly had no inkling that one of my kids would take a dirty sock, dip it in muddy water - and proceed to suck the water out of the sock and drink it. Yes, all of these things happened to us. The more kids you have, the more opportunity for embarrassment. The things I mention are all "unplanables". You can't plan on them happening and you have no idea when it's going to happen to you.

But, life with Toddlers has lots of "planables". You can plan on them happening to you, at least once, if your child is breathing. Planables are things like, running in the store, telling someone you won't be their friend, pushing, begging for things in the store, and many others.

Prepping your child before you enter a new situation can make or break your time- where you are going. So, before we get out of the van, we will tell our kids what is expected of them. Really, when you think about it, you wouldn't want to be on a new job without knowing what's expected of you. Yet, we get frustrated with our kids when they don't exhibit the expected behavior. Right before we get out of the van, I can say, "you are expected to keep your hands to yourself, speak quietly, and stay with me." I then tell them the positive things that they can do. For example, "you can help mommy weigh the produce, get items that mommy asks you to get, and if you're a really good listener, we can get a free cookie from the bakery." Obviously, different rules are used for different locations/tasks.

It is so crucial that when these rules are broken that there is a consequence. I will not tell you what that consequence should be because each child is different. Sometimes we used a consequence for a child that did not work and we had to find one that did. But, the point is, it must be consistent.

At one point, we had a child who would be good throughout the store and then be grumpy with the bakery lady because the cookie wasn't big enough. Guess what, no cookie until you can be thankful. Of course, we had to remind them that was expected before the next trip to the store.

So hang in there, and remember that they are a new person on the job who needs their instructions, confirmation, consistency, and LOVE.

I bought several items and compared the prices. Good news is, I am bringing my total spent down! And now that I have information charts to help me, it'll get better and better every week. :-) Aldi's definitely won, hands down, this week! I use the basil throughout the summer in our grilling and veggies and then in the fall use the rest to make pesto. I had 5 full grown basil plants, so I had to get the pesto rolling. I didn't have walnuts- so I whipped up my own recipe using almonds (which I had on hand). It's great!- You can also add Parmesan cheese if you want.

Garden Pesto
1 cup almonds
3/4 cup olive oil
3 1/2 cup washed basil leaves
1 tsp. lemon juice
3/4 tsp. salt
1 head of garlic

Chop the almonds in a blender- remove and put it in a bowl.
then mix the oil, basil, salt, lemon juice, and garlic in the blender. When it is evenly chopped, add in almonds till it is completely mixed. If it is not salty enough, add a bit more. The basil is done. Enjoy!

I make a huge batch of pancakes every two weeks. We eat some and put the rest in the freezer. It is wonderful to have homemade things to hand off to the kids for breakfast. I am trying to fed my family with things that are more wholesome than what we had been doing. I find that when I "jump off the cliff" with diet changes, I end up shocking the family and I never stick with it. So I've taken a regular pancake recipe and tweaked it to add some healthier choices Sugar in the Raw, pure vanilla, and flax seed). These were fluffy, airy, and filled with flax seed! Enjoy! Try them and let me know what you think.
